Frequently Asked Questions
30 plain answers about privacy, importing documents, the numbers, tax and freelancing. Can’t find yours? Every page explains its own working too.
Getting Started
What is CO₹PU$?
CO₹PU$ is a free net worth tracker and money planner, built first for India and now covering the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the UAE and New Zealand too. You add, or import, what you own and what you owe: bank balances, PPF, EPF, NPS, FDs, mutual funds, stocks, gold, property, loans and cards. It adds everything up into one number, scores your financial health out of 100, points out where money is leaking, and gives you 22 calculators for SIP, XIRR, tax, FIRE, EMIs and more.
It runs entirely inside your web browser. There is no server and no account.
Which countries does it support?
Eight: India, the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the UAE and New Zealand. Pick yours from the country button in the sidebar, or let the app guess it from your device’s time zone (that never leaves your device). Your choice sets the currency, the tax brackets and payroll contributions in the calculators, the retirement accounts in Assets (401(k) and IRA, ISA and pensions, RRSP and TFSA, Super, CPF, KiwiSaver), the tax dates on your dashboard, and where to complain if a bank or insurer lets you down.
Net worth tracking, budgets, goals and the investing calculators work the same everywhere.
How current are the tax rules for each country, and how are they updated?
Every country uses the rules in force when they were last checked, shown on its page (October 2026 for all eight). Each country’s numbers live in one data file, so after a budget only that file changes. Examples: the USA uses the 2026 federal brackets and $16,100 standard deduction, the UK the 2026/27 bands with the £12,570 personal allowance, Canada the 14% lowest federal rate, Australia the 15% rate from 1 July 2026, and New Zealand the 3.5% KiwiSaver default from 1 April 2026.
Is it really free? Do I need to sign up?
Yes, it is free, with no sign up, no login, no ads and no paid tier. Open the dashboard and start. Because there is no account, there is nothing to sell and nobody to sell your data to.
Who is it for?
Anyone in India, the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the UAE or New Zealand who wants a clear picture of their money:
- Salaried people import a payslip and get take-home, retirement contributions and tax worked out.
- Freelancers and consultants import invoices to see their tax, and in India Form 26AS for presumptive tax, TDS credit and advance tax.
- Business owners import bank statements to see money in and out by category.
- Retired people track pension, deposits and interest.
- Students start with a simple budget.
Does it work on a phone, and without internet?
Yes. Every page works on phones, tablets and computers. When the site is hosted on the web you can install it like an app: on Android choose Install app or Add to Home screen in Chrome, on iPhone use Share, Add to Home Screen in Safari. After the first visit it opens without internet. Only live prices need a connection.
Privacy and Your Data
Where is my data stored?
Only in your own browser, on the device you are using, in its built in storage. Nothing is sent to a server, because there is no server. For example, if you add your FD on your laptop it will not appear on your phone. To move data, download a backup file from Settings and restore it on the other device.
Is my payslip or bank statement uploaded anywhere?
No. When you drop a file on the Import page it is read inside the browser tab, in memory, and then let go. The file itself is never stored, not even in the browser. Only the numbers you approve are saved, such as your net pay or a fund’s units. PAN, UAN, bank account and folio numbers are ignored.
You can check this yourself: turn off Wi Fi and mobile data, then import a PDF. It still works.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Clearing site data or browsing history for this site erases what you entered, the same as deleting a local file. Download a backup from Settings now and then, it is a small file you can keep in your email or cloud drive. Private or incognito windows forget everything when closed.
Does CO₹PU$ use AI or send my data to an AI service?
No. Every insight comes from plain rules you can read, for example “credit card interest above 30% should be cleared before investing”. Reading photos of payslips uses a text recogniser (Tesseract) that is bundled with the site and runs offline in your browser, not an online AI service.
When does the site use the internet at all?
Only when you press refresh for live prices: mutual fund NAVs from mfapi.in, gold and silver prices, crypto prices from CoinGecko, exchange rates from Frankfurter, and stock prices from Alpha Vantage, Finnhub or EODHD with your own free key. Those requests carry only a fund code or ticker symbol, never your holdings or amounts.
Do I need an API key for live prices?
Mostly no. Mutual fund NAVs in India (from mfapi.in), gold and silver, crypto and currency rates refresh with no key at all.
Stock prices, and fund or ETF prices outside India, come from Alpha Vantage, Finnhub or EODHD (which also covers the ASX). All three are free but ask every person for a key of their own, and CO₹PU$ has no server to hold a shared one. The first time you press Refresh on one of those, a short guide opens: claim the free key (under a minute, no card), paste it, and it is tested before it is saved. You can manage keys any time under Settings, Live Prices.
Keys stay in your browser and are sent only to the service they belong to. If you would rather not, type the price yourself; everything else works the same.
Importing Documents
Which documents can I import?
- Payslip as PDF, Excel, Word or a photo: fills take-home pay, PF, NPS and the tax, HRA and gratuity calculators.
- Form 16: last year’s salary, deductions, tax paid, and which regime would have been cheaper.
- Bank statement as CSV, Excel, the “.xls” many banks give, or PDF: monthly spending by category for your budget, your balance and regular payments.
- Invoice or income list: receipts, TDS and GST by client.
- Form 26AS or AIS: TDS deducted by clients and banks.
- Broker holdings from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox and others, and CAMS or KFintech CAS for mutual funds.
- EPFO passbook and your own CO₹PU$ backup.
My PDF is password protected. What do I do?
Drop it in anyway. A box asks for the password, which is used only to open the file in your browser and is not saved. Payslips are often locked with your PAN in capitals (like ABCDE1234F) or your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. CAS statements use the password you chose when requesting them.
Can I upload a photo or screenshot of my payslip?
Yes, JPG, PNG and pasted screenshots work, and so do scanned PDFs. The text is recognised offline and usually takes 5 to 15 seconds. Photos are less exact than PDFs, so check each number before applying. A flat, well lit photo taken straight on gives the best result. This needs the site to be opened from a web address, browsers block the recogniser for pages opened straight from a file.
What if a number is read wrong?
Nothing is saved until you press Apply. Every number shows in an editable box, and a Not right? menu lets you say what the document really is. After applying, Undo last import puts everything back exactly as it was.
My bank’s .xls file will not open.
Many banks’ “.xls” downloads are really web pages and open fine. A few banks still use the old binary Excel format from before 2007, which only Excel can read. Open it once in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice and save it as .xlsx or CSV, then import that.
How are bank transactions sorted into categories?
By readable rules on the transaction narration. For example Swiggy and Zomato go to eating out, BigBasket and Blinkit to groceries, “ACH D BSE STAR MF” to SIPs, “EMI” and lender names to loan EMIs, BESCOM or Airtel to bills. Monthly averages are worked out over the statement period. UPI payments to people cannot be told apart, so they go to “Other payments”, and you can adjust any amount before it fills your budget.
Money and Calculations
How is net worth calculated?
Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. Example: ₹3 lakh in the bank, ₹4 lakh in EPF, ₹6 lakh in funds and a ₹55 lakh flat make ₹68 lakh of assets. Minus a ₹21 lakh home loan balance, your net worth is ₹47 lakh. CO₹PU$ updates it as prices move and loans are repaid, and keeps a daily snapshot so you can see the trend.
What is XIRR, and how is it different from CAGR?
CAGR is the yearly growth rate of one amount from a start date to an end date. ₹1 lakh becoming ₹2 lakh in 6 years is a CAGR of about 12.2%.
XIRR is the same idea for many amounts on different dates, like a SIP. It is the right way to measure your real return on SIPs, top ups and partial withdrawals. Both calculators are on the Calculators page.
What is the financial health score?
A score out of 100 made of five checks worth 20 points each: an emergency fund of six months’ expenses, a manageable debt load, a savings rate of 20% or more, life and health cover, and money spread across more than one kind of asset. Each check shows one clear next step.
Old or new tax regime, which should I pick?
For the tax year 2026-27, the new regime has no tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income thanks to the rebate, which means up to ₹12.75 lakh of salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The old regime only wins when your deductions are large, such as HRA on high rent plus full 80C, 80D and home loan interest. Example: on a ₹15 lakh salary with no big deductions, the new regime costs about ₹97,500 against about ₹2,02,800 in the old one. The tax calculator compares both with your own numbers.
What are the main tax dates?
Advance tax: 15 June, 15 September, 15 December and 15 March, if you owe ₹10,000 or more after TDS. Return filing: 31 July for ITR 1 and ITR 2, and 31 August for ITR 3 and ITR 4 cases without an audit. The dashboard lists the next dates and can add them to your phone calendar.
Freelancers and the Self Employed
How are freelancers taxed in India?
Most freelancers and consultants can use presumptive taxation for professionals, section 58 of the Income-tax Act 2025 (the old section 44ADA). Half of your receipts is treated as profit and you do not need to keep detailed books. It applies up to ₹50 lakh of receipts, or ₹75 lakh if 5% or less came in cash.
Example: ₹18 lakh of receipts means ₹9 lakh of profit. Under the new regime that is below ₹12 lakh, so the rebate makes the tax nil, and any TDS your clients deducted comes back as a refund when you file.
Does it work for freelancers and the self employed outside India?
Yes. Pick your country and the freelancer tax calculator switches to its rules: self employment tax plus federal and state tax in the USA, Class 4 National Insurance in the UK, both halves of CPP in Canada, the Medicare levy in Australia, no personal tax but the 9% corporate tax test in the UAE, and so on. You can import an invoice list or bank statement to total your receipts, and the dashboard shows the payment dates that apply where you live.
In India it also handles presumptive tax (half of receipts counted as profit), TDS credit and advance tax.
Do freelancers have to pay advance tax?
Yes, if the tax you owe after TDS is ₹10,000 or more. Under presumptive taxation you can pay all of it in one instalment by 15 March. Otherwise it is due in four parts: 15% by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Missing them adds interest. The freelancer calculator works out the amount and a monthly sum to set aside.
When does a freelancer need GST registration?
When your yearly turnover from services crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states). Services exported to foreign clients are zero rated, but they still count towards the limit. Below the limit, registering is optional.
My clients deducted TDS. How do I get it back?
Clients deduct 10% on professional fees above ₹50,000 a year (section 393 of the new Act, earlier 194J), and 2% for technical services. It appears in your Form 26AS and AIS on the income tax portal and counts as tax already paid. If it is more than your actual tax, filing your return gets you the difference back as a refund.
Accuracy and Trust
Is this financial advice?
No. CO₹PU$ is an educational tool that does the arithmetic and explains the reasoning. Its numbers are estimates, not a confirmation of what you owe or will earn. Tax rules have exceptions, so for decisions with real money at stake, confirm with a qualified professional where you live: a chartered accountant or SEBI registered adviser in India, a CPA or enrolled agent in the USA, an FCA authorised adviser in the UK, and so on.
The Privacy Policy and Disclaimer lists who to check with, and the official sources, for each of the eight countries.
How up to date are the tax rules?
Tax figures are for the tax year 2026-27 (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027), the first year under the Income-tax Act 2025, and were last checked in October 2026. Slabs were unchanged by Budget 2026. Where the new Act renumbered a section, both numbers are shown, for example section 58 (old 44ADA) and section 393 (old 194J).
